In the municipality of Lanzendorf, a “snack garden of biodiversity” with a biodiversity area is being created on a plot of land owned by the municipality (around 2,000 m2). This will promote biodiversity on land that was previously used for agriculture. The planned planting includes native, old fruit varieties and wild fruit species as well as berry bushes.
The biodiversity orchard is freely accessible to the public. A climate-fit recreation area with natural shade is being created, inviting people to relax in nature and observe birds, insects and other wildlife.
Katharina Varadi-Dianat, an expert in orchards and biodiversity, is in charge of the “Naschgarten der Artenvielfalt” project. The implementation of the project is made possible by funding from Blühendes Österreich.
The preparatory work will start in the next few weeks: The existing vegetation must be reduced before the trees can be planted and the biodiversity area established. Sheep from neighboring Zwölfaxing will help with this. They will initially stay on the area for around a week and graze it a total of four times a year.
