ELWG – New opportunities for community energy

The energy industry has been waiting a long time for this, and now the Electricity Industry Act (ElWG) is being reviewed and contains a large number of innovations and changes for the domestic energy market.

Innovations in the shared use of energy

In addition to energy communities, there are plans to further expand the exchange and trading of renewable energy. In future, this will be summarized under the term “shared energy use”. In addition to participation in energy communities, there will be new opportunities in the form of “peer-to-peer” contracts, which will further facilitate the shared use of electricity.

Bidirectional charging

The concept of bidirectional charging has also been enshrined in law for the first time. This refers to the active use and integration of e-cars and their storage capacities in order to not only feed energy into the car’s battery, but also to be able to feed it out.

It remains to be seen how the final legal text will be formulated and how the law will define the new rules of the game for the electricity system of the future.
