Green space check in Scharndorf and Hundsheim

Green space check in Scharndorf and Hundsheim

On February 19, the green spaces in Scharndorf and Hundsheim were inspected together with Petra Hirner (Natur im Garten) and Tina Rigler (KEM Carnuntum) and tips were given on how to care for and preserve the valuable biodiversity.

The flowering meadow at the sports field in Wildungsmauer was a particular focus of attention in Scharndorf. The meadow is developing well, valuable species such as the wild carrot have spread and provide a diverse habitat for many insects and butterflies. Grasses still dominate in places. Patience is required here – the process of meadow thinning takes time and the right care (mowing twice a year and removal of the cuttings), which the municipality of Scharndorf carries out in an exemplary manner.

The newly created flower meadow next to the new waste collection center was also inspected. A positive aspect to be emphasized here is that the soil has been removed to provide optimal conditions for a natural meadow and that nut trees have already been planted.

The inspection in Hundsheim started at the building yard. Mayor Gerhard Math and Bernhard and Hubert from the building yard were also present. The adjacent flower meadow was in perfect condition. It is mowed twice a year and the cuttings are used as horse feed.

The flower meadow next to the playground also has a high biodiversity and impresses the building yard in particular with its low maintenance requirements.

The steep hill at the playground (steep and difficult to mow), the weeds sprouting from the stone wall and the spring pipe, as well as stubborn invasive neophytes such as the common buckthorn, which are spreading rapidly and are almost impossible to combat, pose particular difficulties in terms of green space maintenance. Petra Hirner demonstrated her extensive specialist knowledge and advised on possible solutions, although she also had to admit that there are often no simple solutions to many problems.
