Planned obsolescence is the deliberate shortening of the service life of products – be it through non-replaceable batteries, missing spare parts or software updates that slow down devices to such an extent that they are no longer functional.
The right to repair has therefore been introduced at European level. The EU-wide directive comes into force on July 30, 2024.
Among other things, manufacturers are obliged to provide spare parts and inform customers about their repair rights.
In addition, a Europe-wide standardized form with clear information on repairs (deadlines, prices, etc.) and online repair platforms are to be implemented in order to make the repair steps as simple as possible for consumers.
The law is expected to save more than 35 million tons of waste per year across Europe!
