Review: Climate-fit green surroundings

Review KLAR! Meeting Climate-Friendly Green Surroundings

Multi-purpose hall Trautmannsdorf | February 26, 2026

The joint event organized by KLAR! Am Leithaberge and the regional development association Römerland Carnuntum was well attended. Farmers, municipal representatives and interested citizens took home a lot of information from four top-class speakers.

Edgar Blumauer spoke about the instrument of land use planning and its benefits in the context of climate change adaptation. For example, land use planning can provide areas for water retention and thus mitigate the consequences of heavy rainfall events.

Stefan Lehner, BSc. presented multi-purpose hedges as soil protection systems. In contrast to windbreak belts, multi-purpose hedges remain agricultural land, are biodiversity areas in the sense of ÖPUL and serve as both wind and water erosion protection. Further information is available in the podcast, according to Stefan Lehner, BSc. https://www.zukunftsraumland.at/netzwerk-podcast-mehrnutzenhecken/

After a break with delicacies and drinks from the region and time for networking, Claudia Winkovitsch delved into the diverse world of neophytes. Under the motto “Know your enemy”, the audience was able to learn about the survival strategy of ragweed and possible countermeasures. Further information on the many other neophytes will be provided as a handout for the participants. As the topic is simply too big for a 30-minute lecture, a neophyte action day is being planned!

Prof. Josef Eitzinger concluded the panel of speakers. The agricultural meteorologist and non-fiction author was able to provide impressive scientific evidence that soil protection systems such as windbreaks and multi-benefit hedges have an added value for water storage capacity and agricultural yield.

The representatives of KLAR! Am Leithaberge and the regional development association Römerland Carnuntum hope that the measures presented will be put into practice by the audience. Everyone who cultivates land – whether in the agricultural landscape or in their own garden – can make a major positive contribution to climate change adaptation.

Many thanks to the municipality of Trautmannsdorf and the team with many helping hands in the background for making this event possible.
